Display Blocks was the outcome of my thesis research for the Masters in Media Arts and Sciences at the MIT Media Lab.
Display Blocks is a combination of concept and implementation of a novel display technology. Display technologies have come a long way becoming thinner and more portable, to a point that they are present in mostly all of the computational devices we use in our day to day. However, despite the varity of different uses an content a screen can have they are all flat and rectangular. Display Blocks explores the possibilities that a cubic display holds for data visualization, manipulation and exploration. To this end, the design is accompanied with a set of initial applications that leverage the form factor of the display. The hope for this work is to show the promise of display technologies which use their form factor as a cue to understanding their content.
